WakenhyrstWakenhyrst by Michelle Paver (eARC, courtesy of Head of Zeus and NetGalley)

In Edwardian Suffolk, a manor house stands alone in a lost corner of the Fens: a glinting wilderness of water whose whispering reeds guard ancient secrets. Maud is a lonely child growing up without a mother, ruled by her repressive father.

When he finds a painted medieval devil in a graveyard, unhallowed forces are awakened.

Maud’s battle has begun. She must survive a world haunted by witchcraft, the age-old legends of her beloved fen – and the even more nightmarish demons of her father’s past.

Spanning five centuries, Wakenhyrst is a darkly gothic thriller about murderous obsession and one girl’s longing to fly free.

The Hopes and Dreams of Lucy BakerThe Hopes and Dreams of Lucy Baker by Jenni Keer (eARC, courtesy of Avon and NetGalley)

Meet Lucy, aged 25, and Brenda, aged 79. Neighbours, and unlikely friends.

Lucy Baker is not your usual 25-year-old. She is more at home reading and knitting in her cluttered little flat than going out partying and socialising.

79-year-old Brenda is full of wise and wonderful advice, but when she’s diagnosed with dementia her life begins to change. Before her memories slip away for ever, Brenda is desperate to fulfil one last wish – to see Lucy happy.

Gifting Lucy the locket that helped Brenda find her own true love, she hopes to push her reticent neighbour in the right direction. But is Lucy Baker ready for the opportunities and heartbreaks of the real world? It’s about time she put her knitting needles aside and found out…

Blog posts

Monday – I published my review of historical mystery The Cold North Sea (Ingo Finch Mystery #2) by Jeff Dawson.

Tuesday –  The Top Ten Tuesday topic was My Winter TBR, the type of list that always proves interesting when looked at in retrospect!  I also published my introduction to my Buchan of the Month for December, Sick Heart River by John Buchan.

WednesdayWWW Wednesday is the opportunity to share what I’ve just read, what I’m currently reading and what I plan to read next…and have a good nose around to see what other bloggers are reading.

Thursday – I shared an update on one of my reading challenges for 2018 – the When Are You Reading? Challenge.  I’m pleased to say, for once, I was able to report achievement of a reading challenge.  In my update post you can find details of how to sign up for the 2019 edition of the challenge.

Friday – I published my review of a book from my pile of author review copies – the pacy thriller, Lying in Vengeance by Gary Corbin.

Saturday – I updated on my progress with two other reading challenges for 2018 – the What’s In A Name Challenge and the TBR Pile Challenge.  Mixed results, as you will see.

As always, thanks to everyone who has liked, commented on or shared my blog posts on social media this week.
