As I’m spending a few days in Falmouth in Cornwall, What Cathy Read Next has a Cornish theme this week. I’ll be sharing reviews of books set in Cornwall and also listing some of the many books set in this part of the world.
The theme of today’s list is crime/mystery novels set in Cornwall. Click on the book title to find the description on Goodreads.
The Cliff House by Amanda Jennings
Notes From An Exhibition by Patrick Gale
The Cornish Retribution by Amanda James
Peril at End House (Hercule Poirot #8) by Agatha Christie
The Adventure of the Devil’s Foot by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Black Rabbit Hall by Eve Chase
The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware
Panic Room by Robert Goddard
Do you have a favourite book set in Cornwall or have you read any of the books mentioned above?
I really enjoyed Black Rabbit Hall and I’m not sure if I’ve read that Sherlock Holmes story.

I’ve read two of those : The Cliff House and The Death of Mrs Westaway. I’ve had Black Rabbit Hall on my Goodreads TBR shelf for ages but still haven’t bought a copy.
Hope you’re having a wonderful break! xx

I’d forgotten The Adventure of the Devil’s Foot is set in Cornwall. It’s a good, but rather disturbing, story.

I remember the original ITV Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes and that episode has Denis Quilley as Dr Sterndale. They have this great exchange:
Sherlock Holmes : You went to the vicarage, and you waited there for some time.
Dr. Leon Sterndale : How do you know that?
Sherlock Holmes : I followed you.
Dr. Leon Sterndale : I saw no one!
Sherlock Holmes : That is what you may expect to see when I follow you!

I don’t remember seeing the TV version, although I probably did. I do remember the Radio 4 version with Clive Merrison and Michael Williams. That version of Holmes was most contrite at almost causing Watson’s death. The Holmes of the short story was a lot more brusque.

Lovely to see Notes on an Exhibition on your list. Thoroughly enjoyed that book and it was the one that finally got Gale some attention. Hope you enjoy your week, Cathy.

Thanks, I saw the Gale books mentioned recently (might even have been by you!) and added them to my wishlist.

I didn’t at all remember about Devil’s Foot or Peril at End House being set in Cornwall-good excuse to pick them up again.

Just today I added another title set in Cornwall to my TBR. It is “The Calico Cat” by Amanda James.
